Daily Schedule for the 2013 Ukulele Retreat!

We’ve just posted the Daily Schedule for the 2013 West Coast ‘Ukulele Retreat.  Overall, it’s very similar to last year’s (with five workshop sessions a day), but there are a few notable additions:

Late Night Jams: For this year we have secured  the historic Director’s Cottage at Asilomar, a private cottage which will house some of our staff.  It also has a nice, large living room for workshops AND those late night jams.  This will give those of you who are interested in playing or socializing late into the night an opportunity to do so without disturbing those who’d like to get a little more shut-eye.

Beer & Wine & Open Bars:  Please keep in mind that Asilomar is a California State Park. They do have a license for serving beer & wine, but not hard liquor (which is prohibited from any of the public meeting spaces including the Scripps and Stuck-Up Living Rooms.) We will provide wine with dinner on occasion and an open bar at the Student Cabaret on Saturday night.  Other than that, any beer and wine you consume in public areas must be purchased from Asilomar.

Early Morning Activities:  Kumu Pomaika’i will be on the beach at sunrise each morning to greet the day with a traditional Hawaiian chant, or oli. Any and all retreat attendees are more than welcome to join him.  Following that, I will be leading a brisk  hike along the beach each morning and return in time for breakfast.  If there is anyone who would like lead a yoga class in the morning before breakfast, please let me know so I can announce it and make a space available for you. (By the way, early morning activities are entirely optional!)

Ukulele Care and Repair: Noted luthier Rick Turner will be joining us this year.  In addition to co-teaching a jazz workshop with Sarah Maisel, he will have his workbench set up and will attempt to build a complete ‘ukulele from start to finish during the retreat. He will also be available to perform minor repairs for you, for a nominal fee.

Instructors on Duty: Each instructor will hold “office hours” at least once during the course of the retreat. This will give you an opportunity to visit with them on an informal basis to go over anything you may be having trouble with, get some extra tips or questions answered,  or simply sit and listen to them play.  There is no set format for this and we never know how many folks are going to show up.  So it might be a private lesson….or a private concert…..or neither.

‘Ukulele Flash Mob: New for this year! Yael Schy, our multi-talented dance instructor, will be creating a simple dance routine for those who would like to accompany the ‘ukulele flash mob with their feet.  The dance workshop will be offered after lunch at the same time as Andy’s ‘Ukulele Flash Mob workshop, so you’ll have an opportunity to rehearse together before the actual event. And remember, even though Andy Andrews will be leading a specific “workshop” for flash mob “hinge pins,” everyone will have an opportunity to participate.

Kani Ka Pila Camp Store:  The camp store will be open every afternoon Thursday – Saturday. In addition to having the instructor’s books, CDs, and DVDs for sale, we will have a huge selection of ‘ukulele accessories,  music stands, glass slides, chromatic tuners, T-shirts and other apparel, and ‘ukuleles for sale.

Workshop Schedule: We will be posting this soon.   We just have a few finishing touches to make…….
